Why should you get involved with the CIOT?

4 May 2021

After all, you have clients to serve, utilisation targets to meet, so why should anyone spend their ever-reducing professional or free time volunteering for an educational charity?

Develop your skill base

Help develop a range of skills you would not necessarily learn in your day job:

  • How to chair a committee (developing this skill when you chair your first partner meeting is probably not ideal)
  • How to run a small business as a treasurer, secretary or chair

  • Help organise successful events and exercise your creative marketing skills
  • Gain in-depth knowledge of the tax system

Widen your knowledge base in important technical areas which may not be the primary focus of your day job

  • Anti - money laundering checks
  • What to do when you win or lose a client
  • What to do when you receive a complaint
  • Ethical issues

Meet experienced professionals...

... in a safe environment (no clients, bills or timesheets to deal with!) stemming from many different backgrounds and practices. All will have an interest, as will you, in working towards a better tax system for all.

  • High street practitioners
  • SMEs (small and medium sized enterprises)
  • Big 6 firms
  • Legal practices
  • Industry and commerce
  • Professional bodies
  • NGOs (non-government organisations)

Think technically...

Learn and contribute to leading edge thinking by joining one of our Committees:

  • Recommend and input on HMRC policy
  • Raise your own professional profile
  • Get involved with current debates on how the tax system can be changed or practices improved
  • Discuss public and confidential matters with leading experts in the field
  • Liaise with HMRC, HM Treasury and the European Commission in an environment different from day-to-day practice
  • Time spent on Committee work may count towards CPD non-reading requirements
  • Volunteer to represent the UK at the Confédération Fiscale Européenne (CFE) and attend bi-annual conferences on the Continent
  • Submit your CV to a Technical Sub-Committee

The CIOT is an educational charity and the leading professional body in the UK concerned solely with taxation

Contribute to our examination process by:

Helping keep our syllabus up-to-date and our methods of examination relevant to the tax profession
Promote your organisation's charitable works by getting involved and you will both reap the benefits
